Detoxification and Cleansing – Danger of Tap and Bottled Water

Welcome back to my series on detoxification and cleansing.  So far in this series we have discussed the truth about detoxification, detoxification supportive foods, avoiding personal care product chemicals, and avoiding cleaning product chemicals.  Today we will be focusing on some of the hidden dangers of tap and bottled water.

Is Tap Water Really Safe?

Water is essential to life and in developed nations it is supplied to us through water sanitation companies controlled by government regulations.  So, our tap water must be safe to drink right?  Think again! Unfortunately, chlorine is used to disinfect reused water or water from unsafe sources and its byproducts can have negative health impacts.  Furthermore, many municipalities fluoridate the water supply based on controversial regulations to prevent dental cavities.  On top of that, tap water can also be contaminated with arsenic, aluminum, prescription drugs, and lead (depending on piping).  Here is a list of the major tap water contaminants and their possible negative health effects.

  • Arsenic: A strong poison and powerful carcinogen at non-lethal doses
  • Aluminum: Has been linked to Alzheimer’s Disease, Hyperactivity, Learning disabilities in children, Gastrointestinal disease, Skin problems, Parkinson’s disease, Liver disease.
  • Disinfection Byproducts (ex. Chlorine byproducts): Chlorine is not ideal to ingest but its byproducts can be even worse, possibly causing cancer, liver, nervous system, and kidney problems.
  • Fluoride: The effectiveness of ingested fluoride for dental health has been contentious for a long time with evidence for and against. However, there is no arguing the negative impact of fluoride toxicity.  Excess fluoride ingestion can lead to weak teeth and bones, neurological dysfunction, gastrointestinal dysfunction, immune system dysfunction, endocrine dysfunction, cellular damage, etc.
  • Prescription Medications: Depending on where your tap water is sourced from, contamination with multiple prescription drugs is possible, not only can these drugs interfere with cell growth and function, multiple drugs can mix in the water supply in combinations never meant to be taken together, and don’t forget about medication allergies and the ongoing stress medication consumption puts on our detoxification system (ie. liver).

Is Bottled Water Safe?

Using bottled water as an alternative has its own downfalls.  Not only do a large number of bottled waters simply contain tap water (all the above noted issues), most bottled water is in plastic bottles that contain endocrine disruptors such as BPA (mimics estrogen).  Aside from the terrible environmental impact of plastic bottle use, here are the major health issues with plastic contaminants:

  • Bisphenol A (BPA): Weakly mimics estrogen in our body and has been linked to multiple health problems such as learning and behavioral problems, altered immune system function, early puberty in girls, fertility problems, decreased sperm count, prostate and breast cancer, diabetes and obesity.
  • Phthalates: BPA free plastic still contains these endocrine disrupting chemicals and they have also been linked to a range of health problems such as cancer, liver dysfunction, low sperm count, de-masculinization, testicular atrophy, pre-term birth, etc.
